Bolling Air Force Base is one of the original World War I Army Air Service installations in the United States Air Force. The base is home to the 11th Wing which trains over 80,000 Airmen and deploys combat support for many countries. Initially, Bolling Air Force Base served as a testing ground for aviation equipment and provided protection for the capital by supplying aerial defense. The base will become the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling-Navy Research Laboratory D.C. Housing options are available both on and off-post. Bolling Air Force Base is located near Washington D.C., and there are many surrounding communities in which to find affordable off-post housing depending on the length of commute desired. The shortest commutes averages about 10 miles from the front entrance. Bolling Air Force Base is also home to the United States Air Force Band and the Honor Guard.
Medical care at Bolling Air Force Base is provided by the 579th Medical Group which medical and dental care to enrolled beneficiaries. Services from x-rays to immunizations to optometry are handled out of the Bolling Clinic. Other major medical facilities in the area include Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. and the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. The Child Development Center at Bolling offers child care for children ranging from infants to 5 years old. For in-home care, licensed day care providers are also available by appointment. Continuing educational opportunities are provided by the Education Services Center located in Building 11 at Bolling Air Force Base and cover every item from resume preparation to testing opportunities. Nearby colleges offer courses on post during the week. The base has a commissary and a library as well as two financial institutions for military use. Chaplains are available for counseling services and any other spiritual needs care.
